This Round’s For Bobby: Charity Golf Event

Myrtle Beach Golf Community Rallies to Aid Of Ailing Head Pro

The Myrtle Beach golf community spans 60 miles of Carolinas coastline and includes 90 courses but the industry is, at heart, a big family.

When facing hardship, families rally around their own, and the Myrtle Beach golf industry is again stepping to the plate.

Bobby McCullough, the highly regarded head pro at River Hills Golf Club, is battling stage 4 melanoma, a virulent form of skin cancer, and River Hills will be hosting a benefit in his honor on Sunday, August 28th.

River Hills has been closed since June for renovations and is due to re-open in mid-August. “The re-opening of River Hills will be dedicated to Bobby” says Matt Daly, the Director of Operations, at Founders Group International. The Tom Jackson design will host “This Round’s for Bobby”, an event to raise money to assist McCullough and his family during these challenging times. This event will include a charity golf tournament, silent auction, and various other fundraising opportunities throughout the day.

Hole Sponsorship Opportunities

In the run up to the event, Founders Group International, River Hills’ parent company, is looking for hole sponsors ($125 per hole) silent auction items, and raffle prizes, with all proceeds going to McCullough’s benefit. If you would like to sponsor contact River Hills or email jason.dalton@foundersgolf.com before August 20th.

Event Details

This Round’s for Bobby will be held at River Hills. There will be a golf tournament starting at 9am. During the tournament, there will be golf contests throughout the day including 1) closest to the pin, 2) drive, chip, and putt, and 3) cornhole tournament. All three will have entry fees and winners will receive prizes. In addition, all food and beverage proceeds will go to Bobby throughout the day. It will be a fun-filled day that is open to the public.

About Bobby McCullough

McCullough, who started as a caddie when he was 12 years old, has spent most of his life in the game. He started his career at Sea Gull Golf Club in Myrtle Beach and has worked at Burning Ridge, Wachesaw Plantation, River Club and Indian Wells before taking the reins at River Hills.

While McCullough spent most of his career quietly running courses with great care and efficiency, he attracted the spotlight when he saved a man’s life at the World Amateur Handicap Championship.

Harry Whitt, a World Am player, went into cardiac arrest on the 15th tee at Indian Wells and when his playing partners called the pro shop, McCullough, who is a trained EMT, rushed to the scene and delivered lifesaving CPR. Whitt regained a pulse with McCullough performing CPR and when the emergency crew arrived they transported him to the hospital. Whitt has since resumed playing in the World Am.

It was an act that embodied so much of what people appreciate about McCullough. He saved a man’s life but returned to the pro shop immediately afterwards and resumed doing his job. He didn’t seek attention but when it came, he was quick to credit Whitt’s playing partners and the EMTs who arrived on the scene.

As McCullough faces one of the world’s most dreaded diseases, the Myrtle Beach golf community is coming to his aid, just as he once did for Whitt.
