General Manager/Head Professional David Spoone, a Class A member of the PGA of America, took the helm as one of the Myrtle Beach golf pros at River Hills in December 2014, but he has worked at the club since 2008, beginning as an Assistant Golf Professional.
David graduated from the Golf Academy of the Carolinas (now called Golf Academy of America) in 1999 in a class of five. He credits top instructor Eric Wilson for his first-rate education.
David then worked at several area golf courses, and while at Bay Tree from 2000–2004, he enrolled in the PGA/PGM program, which was generously paid for by Bay Tree. At his next golf course job, at Glen Dornoch, he worded as Head Professional. Then in 2006 he joined the NGA Hooters Tour, based out of North Myrtle Beach, where he served as a Rules Official and a coordination assistant for the tournaments.
With a father in the Air Force, David happened to be born on Scott Air Force Base in O’Fallon, Illinois. As a child, he spent 4 and a half years in Tampa at MacDill Air Force Base and then bounced back to Scott AFB. But most of his remaining childhood was spent living in Alexandria, Virginia, except for a stint in Panama, when he was in the sixth and seventh grades.
After a couple of years of college, David became a defense contractor and worked his way up to senior program analyst. Then the contracting world shifted, and seeing the handwriting on the wall, David decided to make a career change. He moved to Myrtle Beach to attend the golf school.
Starting around age five, David was a passenger in golf carts with his mother and older brother, and he started playing at the age of eight, after an understanding golf pro cut down his mother’s 4-wood and crafted a new grip for him. He then played junior golf under the tutelage of retired WWII veterans who dedicated their time to helping young golfers.
He is the dedicated father of two children and the owner of a Labrador retriever. He enjoys being outdoors, hunting and fishing. As a sports fan, he follows golf, baseball, football, and college basketball.
